Loudon Wainwright III - Ode To A Pittsburgh Lyrics

Send Ode To A Pittsburgh Ringtone to your Cell

Pennsylvania's western daughter
With your tubes of liberty
Princess of pig-iron slaughter
With your boyfriend Carnegie

Oh you were stained gla*sed
You were smokestacked
You were laid in cobblestone
You were trolley car tracked
And for you the red sky shone

And while thieves, and black-sleeved buccaneers
Pitched and kicked their orbs
It was for you that I cheered my wild cheers
In the field of Mr Forbes

I sent cinnamints from Shadyside
I paid homage from The Hill
Oh no, it cannot be denied
And Cola-Coke can't kill

Let the trees in Chemney grow strong
May the bagpipes never burst
Let the Allegheny roll right along
May I thirst the Duquesne thirst

May your steel mills stand forever
And your Learning Tower too
May Mellon remain clever
Good luck and God bless you

Another winner from Loudon. This first album was really a mind blower, bought it in the thrift bin at Tower Records on Sunset in about '71 or '72. Not sure if I had heard him on the radio or what made me buy it, but it really is fantastic. He uses words so well, and the pitch of his voice is just right for these incredibly emotional songs. He's been a fav ever since, saw him in concert at some small club in LA with Steel Eye Span as the opener. Wow!

I've actually had this album for a while, but just listened again for the first time in a long time and was struck by the depth of detail about Pittsburgh...more than I remembered.

One thought about the lyrics posted...isn't it Schenley (Park)where the trees grow strong?

Thanks
